Coach Dusty Smirl

Dusty Smirl graduated from Denton Ryan High School in 2004, after leading the Raiders to consecutive State Championship appearances. That year, he was also named to the All State Team, was the district 6-4A Pitcher of the Year, and Team MVP. In 2004, he pitched 120 innings, with 120 strikeouts, 15 walks, and a record setting 0.54 ERA overall, with a 0.43 ERA in district with an overall record of 12-1. In four years at Denton Ryan, Dusty won 40 games. In 2003, he received the Fighting Heart Award.

After high school, Dusty attended Odessa Junior College, where he began a rehab assignment. In 2005, after verbally committing to Arizona State University, Dusty underwent shoulder surgery and another rehab assignment. Learning that he needed another shoulder clean-up, Dusty decided in 2006 that he would hang up the spikes.

Since then, he has done private pitching lessons for numerous teams, including Denton Ryan, Denton High, Guyer High, Collinsville, Pilot Point, The Highland Village Storm, Texas Sliders, Texas Titans, and Dallas Panthers.

Coaching Philosophy

His theory of “in-line pitching” has sent several young men to the next level and one of them to the 2009 All State Team.

His goal is to get the absolute most of every pitcher and every one of their pitches. He teaches strength & conditioning, mental toughness, and how to pitch by feel.

"Finish through your target.”
